Save the River Usk – Education & Learning

Inspiring the next generation to understand, protect and restore one of Wales’ most iconic rivers
The River Usk is one of Wales’ most ecologically significant waterways. Stretching over 120 km from its source in the Brecon Beacons to the tidal Severn Estuary, it supports rich biodiversity and communities that have depended on it for generations. Yet today, elevated pollution levels—including phosphates, sewage contaminants and agricultural run-off—threaten the river’s ecological future.

Save the River Usk
is a UK-based community-led environmental organisation dedicated to reversing this decline. We combine scientific rigour, grassroots engagement and policy advocacy to improve water quality, protect habitats and empower citizens of all ages to care for their natural waterways.

Our Educational Mission

We believe that a well-informed public is essential to lasting environmental stewardship. Our educational work is designed to:
  • Demystify freshwater science — giving learners the tools to understand water quality indicators, river ecology and human impacts.
  • Build critical thinking skills through hands-on data collection and analysis.
  • Connect classroom learning to real-world environmental challenges facing Wales and the UK.
  • Inspire action and citizenship by showing how scientific data can influence policy and community outcomes.

Learning Through Action: What We Do
1. Citizen Science & Water Quality Monitoring
We train volunteers—including pupils, students and community groups—to chart water quality at key locations along the River Usk. Participants measure parameters such as temperature, phosphates, nitrates and, increasingly, bacterial indicators like E. coli. This first-hand data collection develops scientific literacy and contributes to a broader evidence base used by researchers and decision makers.
2. Data Analysis & Collaboration
Collected samples are shared with academic partners, including the University of South Wales, where they are analysed and contextualised within ongoing environmental research. This partnership brings credible scientific methods into community-led education and provides students with exposure to real research workflows.
3. Resource Development & Curriculum Support
We offer teaching resources and practical guides that link local river systems to national curriculum goals in environmental science, geography and citizenship education. These resources support educators looking to bring outdoor learning and sustainability topics into their classrooms.

Events, Workshops & Field TripsWe organise field-based sessions, workshops and community events that bring learning to life, including:
  • River sampling days
  • Festival programmes with learning stalls and interactive exhibits
  • Guest talks from scientists, local activists and policy advocates
These activities encourage students and educators alike to explore environmental issues collaboratively.

Partner with Us
Save the River Usk welcomes partnerships with schools, colleges, universities and environmental education providers. Together we can:
  • Create bespoke learning modules linked to the Usk catchment
  • Integrate water quality monitoring into school science projects
  • Support student research and community action plans

Inspiring Future StewardsBy engaging learners in meaningful environmental investigation and community action, Save the River Usk seeks to build informed, motivated and environmentally responsible citizens. Whether in the classroom, on the riverbank or in civic spaces, education is central to our mission of restoring the Usk for wildlife and future generations
